Childhood Eczema Print
Written by Linda Sones
Possible Aggravating Factors  I have recently been wondering if the increased incidence of childhood eczema could possibly be linked to clothing and bedding used. Natural untreated fibres used in the manufacture of clothing cause almost no skin problems. Conventionally grown cotton we know is very chemically intensively farmed and amongst many other potential side effects skin damage is mentioned. There is also much speculation about the harmful effects of formaldehyde which is used in textile finishing. It is widely accepted to be carcinogenic in some circumstances.

Growing a green Baby Print

Modern parents are becoming increasingly concerned about the future of our planet and safeguarding it for future generations we are told by the media. So to begin at the beginning tiny babies have very few real consumer needs. They need food, clothing, warmth and a lot of love. So first off try to avoid using disposable nappies if not all of the time at least some of it. Think of all those landfill sites. Breast feed if you possibly can you have it on tap! Although I do understand that this is not possible for everyone. When it’s time for solid foods make your own why does it all have to come out of a tin or jar. It needn’t even be that time consuming you can freeze a little extra vegetable etc prepared when you cooked your own meal and have several  ready for use. Choose organic cotton produced without toxic chemicals it lasts longer when washed and doesn’t irritate tender baby skins.

There are no simple solutions and legislation alone will only drive the practice further undercover. The International Labour Rights Forum (ILRF) have concluded in a recent report that corporations are not making sufficient interventions in eliminating child labour in cotton but that is not the sole problem.

Organic Materials...is it all just hype??? Print
Written by Linda Sones

In this article I have decided to look behind some of the hype about organic textiles and their sustainability and find the materials which are truly sustainable and eco friendly. Global awareness of the real price of clothing is growing and consumers are pushing for more eco friendly apparel. There are more reported cases of people experiencing health problems such as rashes, allergies, respiratory problems and difficulties with focusing mentally due to chemical sensitivities and many have found organic clothing to be helpful in reducing exposure to the vast amount of toxic chemicals we are unknowingly exposed to on a daily basis.
